Our Mandate
Generally the statutory mandate of the Foundation is made up of two components as main functions of the Foundation namely Research and Programmes;
The first component is to conduct development research on the life and legacies of the Late Sir Ahmadu Bello in the areas of values in service; Exemplary Leadership and Good Governance; Development Strategies; Education, Religious and Ethnic Tolerance; Accountability and Transparency as well as document and disseminate its findings.
The second component is to initiate, design, develop and implement as well as monitor, evaluate, review and report development programmes in key sectors in Northern Nigeria.
Specifically the Foundation performs the following functions as its mandate:

Our Accomplishments
Since its inception, the Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation has achieved remarkable milestones, thanks to the foresight and determination of both the Foundation’s Board of Trustees & Advisory Council, and its strong Management. Institutional Capacity
▪ Acquired and re-constructed a befitting corporate headquarters situated in Kaduna, North West Nigeria. SABMF headquarters also has:
- Fully functional Multi-purpose Hall and Conference rooms.
- Modern and decently furnished Guest Chalets.
- A well-stocked Library and Documentation Centre.
▪ Employed highly efficient staff and conducts continuous technical and professional capacity development;

Education
▪ Northern Education Review Summit
Critical stakeholders from the 19 northern states and FCT to reviewed the situation of education in the region. It examined the successes and challenges of education and proffered far reaching measures to improve the situation based on the existing plans. March 2011.
▪ Undergraduate Science and Technology Scholarship Programme
In 2012 SABMF introduced Undergraduate Scholarship in public tertiary institutions in Nigeria to promote the study of science and technology by indigent students of the 19 northern states and the FCT. So far, 680 students were awarded scholarships of One Hundred Thousand Naira only (N100, 000) each annually for the duration of their courses of between four (4) years to seven (7) years.
▪ Teacher Training on Quality Teaching
SABMF sponsored a teacher training workshop on Quality Teaching for 100 teachers in Primary Schools in Northern Nigeria in February, 2016.
▪ Research on the State of Education in Northern Nigeria
In March 2018, the Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation commenced a research on the State of Education in Northern Nigeria. In 2020 a comprehensive report detailing the state of education in all the states of the north was concluded. The report serves as a source of information and data for policy and development purposes.
Leadership and good Governance
January 15 of each year is earmarked by the Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation to mark the unfortunate demise of Sir Ahmadu Bello, Premier of the Northern Region, the Prime Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, and many other illustrious leaders of the North on January 15, 1966. The day is marked with the Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Annual Lecture, in remembrance of the qualities of leadership and good governance they epitomized, and to discuss topical issues to proffer solutions to the nation’s socio - economic challenges for sustainable peace, unity and progress of the North and Nigeria.
The Foundation under its Leadership and Good Governance Initiative accomplished the following lectures/seminars:
▪ The maiden edition of Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Lecture was held in December 2012. It was delivered by Prof. (Amb) Ibrahim Agboola Gambari. It was well attended by stakeholders.
▪ The 50th Commemoration Conference and lecture on the demise of Sir Ahmadu Bello, delivered by Arc Muhammad Dewu, 2016.
▪ The Agenda Setting Conference on Security and Development of Northern Nigeria was held 2017, and delivered by Dr Suleyman Ndanusa.
▪ Conference on the Herdsmen/Farmers Conflict, 2018 delivered by Bishop Mathew Hassan Kukah.
▪ Second edition of the round table on Farmers/Herders conflict was organized in July 2018.
▪ Comparative Analysis between the Presidential and Parliamentary System of Government 2019 delivered by Prof CJ Dakas
▪ Integrated Agriculture for Food Security and Sustainable Economic Regeneration in Northern Nigeria, delivered by Vice Admiral Murtala H. Nyako GCON, January 2020.
Sir Ahmadu Bello Distinguished Service Awards
In recognition of the selfless and exemplary service of individuals to the nation, the Foundation has instituted the annual Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Distinguished Service Awards,
whereby deserving individuals are selected in an open and transparent manner. Award recipients must have excelled in their chosen fields of human endeavors.

Health
The health sector is one area that intervention is most needed and, in this respect, the Foundation designed and executed its Health Care related programmes. Such programmes include Medical Caravans, training of Traditional Birth Attendants, Health Education Programmes, and Vaccinations etc. In addition to that, SABMF supports training of manpower in the medical sector among others.
▪ Emergency Trauma/blast Care Skills for Doctors and Health Workers
The Foundation under its Health Strengthening Intervention programme successfully conducted three zonal workshops on Emergency Trauma/Blast Care Skills for Doctors and Health Workers with 209 participants.
Workshops were held in Gombe (North East Zone) and Sokoto (North West Zone) in June 2013 as well as in Ilorin (North Central Zone) in November 2013. Under the Medical programme, the Foundation had trained 156 medical doctors and nurses in Blast Skills and Trauma Management.
▪ SABMF Free Medical Outreach
Conducted for Rabah Community in Rabah Local Government Area of Sokoto State in 2017, where over 2,000 people were screened and treated for various diseases, including surgical operations.
▪ Safe Drinking Water Project
- Solar Powered Borehole with Lead - Free Water Purification Scheme at Yar Galma Village in Bukkuyum Local Government Of Zamfara State. The Foundation in its Health programme intervention, constructed Solar Powered Borehole in the community to provide access to safe and portable drinking water.
- Lead Poison-free solar powered borehole facility in Dareta, Zamfara State
- Kagara community of Niger State is yet to be completed.
- Construction of boreholes in two communities in Barkin – Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State
▪ Donation of Face Masks
As part of our resolve to contribute towards the fight against the deadly COVID – 19 pandemic, the Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation has procured and distributed 30,000 face masks to the 19 states of the North and the FCT. This is in addition to radio and TV jingles sponsored and aired in all mass media across the north.
Entrepreneurship and skills Acquisition Trainings
The Foundation as part of its mandate to develop and empower women and youths in the Northern region has conducted series of training
under its Women Vocational Entrepreneurship Development Programme (WVEDP), in order to develop the knowledge, skills and competencies
of beneficiary women and youth on entrepreneurship. A total of 2,900 beneficiaries were trained.
The training programmes were conducted in all the 19 Northern States of Kogi, Kaduna, Niger, Bauchi, Kebbi, Sokoto, Kwara, Kano, Taraba, Nasarawa, Gombe, Adamawa, Borno, Yobe, Jigawa, Katsina, Benue, Plateau, and Zamfara states and FCT.

Peace Building and Conflict Resolution
▪ Relief Materials for Victims of Flood Disaster
The Foundation distributed essential relief materials to the state governments of Kogi, Edo, Benue, Plateau, Kaduna, Niger, Kwara, Taraba, Adamawa and Sokoto for victims of flood disasters in 2012.
▪ Relief Materials for Victims of Insurgency and other Disasters
In June 2013, basic relief materials were presented to Borno State Government for victims of insurgency in Bama and Baga areas of the state. In addition, the Foundation made cash donations to Borno State Government to assist the IPDs.
▪ Donation of Relief materials to Yobe state
Relief materials were also presented to victims at the IDP camps in Yobe State in 2013.
▪ Peace and Unity Mission
- The Foundation had embarked on visits to three states namely; Bauchi, Borno and Yobe in February 2013 for as Peace and Unity Mission. It was led by Hon. Justice Mamman Nasir, CFR, and Chairman of Advisory Council.
- SABMF in June 2018 participated in a National Consultation Forum organized by the International Action Network on Small Arms (IANSA). Stakeholders were drawn from Women in Politics, Traditional and Religious Leaders, INEC, CSOs, Women Groups and Young Female Politicians.
- The Consultation was on security challenges and how to synergize with security agents as well as the role of stakeholders towards mitigation of gender-based electoral violence and sensitizing the public on gender-based electoral violence.
- In April 2018, SABMF also attended Women Cross Learning Dialogue on Peace building organized by Women's International League for Peace and Freedom.
The dialogue which is a continued discussion on reclaiming the United Nation as a Peace organization-ensuring Women's meaningful participation for peace and strengthening multilateralism, seeks to bringing Activists from the Middle-east and North Africa (MENA) region and Activists from Northern Nigeria, as a first step towards creating a space to share experiences and increase solidarity between activists from MENA and Africa.
▪ The Hate Speech Project
SABMF supported the Arewa Research Development Project (ARDP) on a project called Hate Speech and it is still on-going. The project was meant to identify, track, document and analyse all recorded and reported instances of hate speech, ethics or religious hatred in the country with compilation of relevant legislation, jurisdiction and policies. The outcome of the project will enable contemporary forms of ethnic discrimination to be detected and identified accurately
▪ Conference on Security
The Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation Agenda Setting Conference on Security and Development of Northern Nigeria was held on the 25th and 26th April, 2017.
▪ Round Table on Herdsmen/Farmers Conflict
A Round Table on the Herdsmen/Farmers Conflict on mitigating conflicts and insecurity in the north was next held on the 5th and 6th of March 2018. The Foundation organized a first roundtable discussion as an Intervention on the increasing rate of conflicts and insecurity in northern Nigeria. The second edition of the round table was organized in July 2018.
▪ Conference on Education in Northern Nigeria: Status, Challenges and Way Forward. The Conference on Education was held on Tuesday 10th October, 2023.
The Conference was organized to showcase and present to the Public the Research Document sponsored by the Foundation on state of Education in Northern Nigeria.
